Congregation Based Shelter
Fall and Winter from November through early April, GMC needs volunteers for its Congregation Based Shelter program. The shelter is open 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, 7 days a week. The shelter is hosted for a week or two at different participating congregations in the Georgetown area and then rotates to the next congregation. Residents, staff, and volunteers sleep on cots. There is a paid staff person present at all times. The following volunteers are needed to support the shelter program:

|
Dinner Volunteers - prepare, serve and join the residents for dinner. Usually five to eight volunteers work together to supply the food and prepare dinner for about 20 people (this number includes residents, staff and volunteers). Dinner is served at 7:30 pm. Many of the congregations have excellent kitchen facilities to use. Arrangements need to be made in advance for those wishing access to the kitchens before 6:30 pm.
Overnight Volunteers - spend the night (volunteers do get to sleep). Bring your own sleeping bag and pillow, we will supply the cot. Overnight volunteers come in time to share the meal with the guests, 7:00 pm. They support the staff person as needed and engage the residents in conversation. The overnight volunteer can leave by 7:00 am.
Attention Volunteers: There is no off-street parking at most congregations, so you will have to find parking on the street.
Spring and Summer please call us about new opportunities.
For more information about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at Georgetown Ministry Center Monday through Friday between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm at (202) 338-8301.
