If you are a fan of our Facebook page, you probably saw that we want to repaint our walls a warmer color. We were choosing between these colors:

We put blocks of each color on our wall (what a conversation starter that was!) and let everyone ruminate on what would look best for the center: what would look warm and inviting, reflect light, and go well with the gray accent wall in our kitchen.

Today, we voted during our House Meeting and the winning color is… LEMON CHIFFON!

HELP US PAINT!

On Thursday, April 12 at 2pm, we are going to start taping and putting down drop cloths. Come by and join GMC staff and members. We will work until the early evening (6 or 7pm). This might turn out to be a two-day project, so stay tuned for another painting day if you can’t make it on April 12.

PLEASE RSVP if you plan on coming – send Stephanie an email (stephanie@gmcgt.org) or RSVP on our Facebook event page!

This week Students from Jackson State University visited Georgetown Ministry Center to learn about homelessness first hand.  Roy took a group out on Monday to see where people sleep on the street.  Today Gunther took another group out.  We seem to be developing a curriculum on homelessness.  We visited sites where homeless people lived but avoided going into spaces where homeless people were at the time.  Students had an opportunity to see the conditions homeless people live under on our streets.  An exchange student from Yemen said that he had thought that everyone in the US was rich and wondered why the government didn’t do something about it.  Were it that simple.

They were great!  We really enjoyed having them.

The Washington Club honored GMC with a Community Service Award at their annual Have a Heart Luncehon on Valentine’s Day. We are grateful to Arden Batch of the Club and as an active member of Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown for nominating us.

Turnabout is fair play in these sorts of events, and GMC surprised Arden with our own community service award for her work with a homeless individual, Keith. As much as we try to connect with people, sometimes it takes a different approach. Arden reached out to Keith and connected him with a core service agency, eventually getting him into housing. She wins our community service award.

GMC’s consulting psychiatrist, Ron Koshes, gave the keynote speech entitled “The History of Homelessness.” We also debuted the informational video about GMC that Nelson Cuellar, a local filmmaker, made for us.

We are grateful to all of our friends who took time out of their busy day to join us. It was a great event. You can see more pictures of the event in our Have a Heart album on Facebook.

Are you weak for chocolate?

If you’ve been in Georgetown recently, you may have seen this logo for fliers for this event. For an entire week starting February 13th, one can enjoy chocolate-inspired food, drinks, and dessert specials offered by Georgetown merchants when he or she purchases a Week For Chocolate badge from SalesVote.com.

Week For Chocolate will donate 10% of designated badge sales to Georgetown Ministry Center. When customers purchase their badge, they will have the option to select one of four organizations of which they would like their donation to be given. We hope you will choose us!

Keep reading to see the list of participating merchants and their offers.

Water Street Gym Coat Drive

Steve and Susan Kostorowski, along with Patricia Peva, of Water Street Gym presided over one of the largest coat drives in Georgetown history.  The timing was perfect.  Over 90 beautiful coats in mint condition along with assorted hats, gloves, and scares were delivered to GMC today by the folks of Water Street Gym.  The Gym held a coat drive over the last month and a half.  Thank you, Waterstreet Gym.  Thank You!
