Water Street Gym Coat Drive

Steve and Susan Kostorowski, along with Patricia Peva, of Water Street Gym presided over one of the largest coat drives in Georgetown history.  The timing was perfect.  Over 90 beautiful coats in mint condition along with assorted hats, gloves, and scares were delivered to GMC today by the folks of Water Street Gym.  The Gym held a coat drive over the last month and a half.  Thank you, Waterstreet Gym.  Thank You!

Today we sang a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to our members and staff born in January (and a few Decembers who missed the celebration last month). It was the most lively singing of the birthday song we’ve had to date!

We couldn’t have done it without this beautiful and delicious 3-tier carrot cake from Serendipity 3! Dorothy, a staff member born in December, says carrot cake is her favorite kind. YUM!

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Point in Time survey, helped us canvass the streets, or sent us tips. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Yesterday shortly after 2pm, a Georgetown University facilities employee found a man’s body in a tent just off campus. Though the man, identified as Clark Cavelli, was a homeless individual in the area, he was not a guest of Georgetown Ministry Center. The word on the street is that he spent his days in Rosslyn.

You can read more about this on the Georgetown Patch or Georgetown Voice.

If you know of a homeless person who spends his/her night in Georgetown, please let us know. We will do our best to reach out to him/her on Wednesday night when we conduct the annual Point in Time Survey. Email us at info@gmcgt.org or call us at 202-338-8301.

Help us with our Point-in-Time Survey

Georgetown MInistry Center is coordinating the annual The Point-in-Time survey in the Georgetown area.  This is part of a nationwide effort to understand the expanse of homelessness in the U.S.  This year, the count for unsheltered individuals will be conducted on Wednesday, January 25, between 9:30pm and 2am.

OK, maybe you don’t want to come out on Wednesday night.  We know it will be cold but you can still help.  Do you know of a homeless person who has been spending the night in Georgetown?  Let us know.  We will try to find him or her the night of the Point In Time Survey.  We want to count everyone.

But if you are interested, join GMC staff and volunteers in canvassing the Georgetown area for homeless individuals. The aim is to collect a count of how many people are on the street in our area, completing a questionnaire for each person we meet on the street.

Want to participate? Call or email (202)338-8301 ask for Roy or Gunther or email info@gmcgt.org.  Then come to GMC on Wednesday, January 25, between 9 and 9:30 pm. We are located at 1041 Wisconsin Ave NW (map and directions here). Dress warmly and bring a flashlight, if you have one.  You can also use these contacts to alert us to people we should be looking out for.

Why do we gather this information? The information will be used to help determine the need for supportive services in the District. It will also help us learn how homeless assistance organizations can better assist people on the street.

Questions? Contact Roy at roy@gmcgt.org or call us at 202-338-8301
