Last January, GMC partnered with Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice to create a volunteer Hypothermia Outreach Team (HOT) to do street outreach on the coldest nights and to make sure that those living on the street in our community are safe.

WAMU featured the Hypothermia Outreach Team in a segment today. We think this is required listening and hope you will share it with your friends and family! It does a great job of telling the story and showing the interactions between our volunteers and those who stay on the streets.

Where have all the patients gone?

murphyRepresentative Tim Murphy opened yesterday’s House subcommittee hearing on the shortage of psychiatric beds with this question. A panel of experts, including GMC’s own Gunther Stern, spoke for over two hours about the lack of adequate mental health care and the impact it has on families, taxpayers’ dollars, and our society.

This hearing, held by The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, is part of the Committee’s ongoing oversight of Federal spending on research and treatments for mental illness. The hearing, as described in the hearing’s memo,  examined “the strain that this shortage exerts on the seriously mentally ill throughout our communities in the form of homelessness as well as increased contact with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, more generally.”

Keep reading for a few excerpts from panelists’ testimonies.

Georgetown University students Ryan Fan and Zohaib Khalid wanted to learn more about the homeless living in Georgetown, so for their Leadership class, they set out to create a video capturing some of their stories, feelings, and thoughts.

Here is what they learned.

Back in September, the Citizens Association of Georgetown dedicated one of their meetings to educating the Georgetown community about homelessness, mental illness, and Georgetown Ministry Center. We showed two videos featuring the family members of individuals that came to GMC, and have now added these two videos to our  Media Page.

We invite you to listen and watch Greg’s Story and Tom’s Story.

… Georgetown Ministry Center’s brand new video about who we are and what we do!

Back in November, we posted about Nelson Cuellar, a local filmmaker who volunteered to help us make a video about Georgetown Ministry Center. Nelson spent several hours in our center filming and interviewing staff, guests, and volunteers. He spent even more hours editing the footage, and we premiered the final product at the Have a Heart luncheon on Valentine’s Day.

Thank you so much, Nelson, for all of your work and enthusiasm!
