photography 041In January 2013, we turned our old administrative office in the rectory of Grace Church into a clothing closet for our guests. For the past year and a half, staff and volunteers have sorted through donations of clothes, organized the closet, and distributed clothes to our guests on a weekly basis. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed in some way!

In August, there will be some changes to our clothing closet. We are moving our closet across the hall to a smaller space, and so we are now limiting the kind of clothing donations we accept and distribute. We are striving to always have clean socks and underwear for our guests — the most needed and requested items — as well as t-shirts in good condition, travel-sized toiletries, seasonal items, and specially requested items.

Because of this change, we are only accepting the following items:

  • gently used or new athletic socks, adult men’s and women’s
  • new men’s and women’s underwear
  • gently used or new t-shirts and undershirts
  • travel sized toiletries
  • and other seasonal items as requested

You can find out more details on our Wishlist page. Additionally, we now have an Amazon wish list where you can see what we need and send donations directly to GMC.

We have already told our guests of this change and have contacted other service providers to create a list of alternate resources for our guests. We hope that you will help us make our new clothing closet a success by providing us with the bare necessities that our guests so desperately need. Check out our Amazon Wish List today!

If you shop online, you’ve probably bought something from Amazon.com at least once. Some people even do their everyday shopping for things like toilet paper and deodorant on Amazon. But, did you know that every time you shop, Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchase to Georgetown Ministry Center?

All you need to do is shop through Amazon Smile. Go to http://smile.amazon.com, log in to your Amazon account, and select Georgetown Ministry Center as your charity of choice. Remember to shop through Amazon Smile in the future and we’ll all come out on top.

Here’s how you can get your dollar to do more for GMC

We now have a wish list on Amazon! It lists things like socks and underwear, supplies for our art therapy group, and ground coffee. Your donation of these items can do double duty for us if you buy it through Amazon Smile. We’ll get your donation AND a donation from Amazon that way! A double win for us!

Today we bring you a list of our volunteer and in kind needs. Please, if you know of anyone who can drive us to and from the Nats game next Tuesday, let us know ASAP!

VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Driver with a van (or mini-van)

GMC is searching for someone with a van (or two people with two mini-vans) who would be willing to drive a small group of GMC guests and staff to and from the Nationals game on Tuesday, July 8. The driver is invited to the game with us!

The maximum number of people in the group, drivers included, is 10 people. Please contact Stephanie Chan, Communications Director, at stephanie@gmcgt.org for more information or if you are interested.

Volunteers for Georgetown Community Homeless Census

GMC and the BID are planning to do a summer follow up to the annual winter Point in Time count of homeless persons. The tentative date for this is Wednesday, July 23 or Thursday, July 24 starting at 9pm.

We are searching for volunteers to help us count and survey homeless individuals in Georgetown that night. Volunteers should be 16 years or older and able to walk at least a mile. Please contact Stephanie Chan at stephanie@gmcgt.org for more information or if you are interested.

IN-KIND NEEDS

Supplies for GMC’s Art Therapy Group

GMC is starting its very own Art Therapy group led by a psychologist who is volunteering with us. Please help us get this group off the ground. We are in need of two simple supplies — newsprint pads and crayons.

Supplies can be dropped off at GMC any day between 8am and 4pm. Please let the staff person know that they are for our art therapy group.

Deodorant

Now that it’s hot and sticky outside, many of our guests have been requesting deodorant, and we don’t have any to pass out! Can you help our guests feeling and smelling fresh? Travel or full sized NEW deodorant is much appreciated.

One day to give. One day to make a difference.

Powered by United Way of the National Capital Area, this innovative, 24-hour online fundraiser will raise much-needed funding for nonprofit organizations like us. On June 19 from midnight to midnight, thousands of area residents will come together to create solutions to our community’s most pressing challenges by participating in Do More 24.

Last year, 12,000 Do More 24 donors contributed $1.3 million to more than 500 participating nonprofits. This is Georgetown Ministry Center’s first year participating, and you can help us make it a success.

How Can You Be a Part of Do More 24?

Bookmark our Do More 24 page. On June 19, go to our page to donate. Just $24 can go a long way and help us pay the fee for a homeless individual to get a copy of his or her birth certificate — a crucial step towards obtaining ID, benefits, and housing.

What makes Do More 24 different than any other giving campaign?

There are some great awards for the organization with the most unique awards and for the organization with the most money raised. The organization with the greatest number of unique donors will receive an extra $15,000! It all starts with a gift of $24.

Why should I give?

Because Georgetown Ministry Center is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and our teeny tiny center manages to serve 1,300 people annually.

Because Georgetown Ministry Center connects with the most vulnerable, withdrawn, and service-resistant homeless members of our community.

Because what we do makes a difference! Whether it’s listening to someone tell her story or calling an ambulance to save someone’s life, we have a profound impact on everyone we serve.

You can help us end homelessness one person at a time.

On June 19, click here to support GMC!
