In response to the freezing weather we’ve been experiencing in DC lately, the sanctuary of Grace Church (located at 1041 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007 — enter through the red, wooden double doors in front of the church) will be open as a warming center from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the temperature is below 32 degrees while GMC is closed for renovation. The warming center will replace the tent that has been held in front of GMC’s entryway. When the temperature rises above 32 degrees, the warming center will close and GMC staff will take guests for showers and laundry services at the various local congregations where these services are available.
Food donations are welcome, but please arrange 48 hours in advance by contacting Ashley Lane, ashley@gmcgt.org.
The Grace Church Parish Hall will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays for the duration of the GMC closing.  Grace Church’s own Grace’s Table ministry serves lunch at 11:30 on Saturdays.  On Sundays, GMC serves a meal at 1:30 in the Rose Room, underneath the sanctuary.
Please note that there is no bathroom access Monday through Friday, as bathrooms are reserved for children and staff of the Montessori School.

You don’t need us to tell you that it’s been freezing outside lately. Record-low temps mean it is far too cold for anyone to be outside right now, period. Some chronically homeless individuals have mental-health issues so profound that they can’t discern for themselves whether it is safe enough to remain outside.

Let’s continue to look out for one another.

To get help for a homeless person in extremely cold weather, listed below are all the ways to contact the hypothermia hotline:

202-399-7093

311

1-800-535-7252

uposh@upo.org

The call will take you less than a minute and a hypothermia team will be dispatched to the location of the individual suffering to bring them to a warming center or overnight shelter and deliver items to protect from the cold.

A homeless man sits covered in snow in Washington, DC.

Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is around 98.6 F. Hypothermia occurs as your body temperature passes below 95 F. When your body temperature drops, your heart, nervous system and other organs can’t work correctly.

According to DC city records, 4 homeless individuals died from hypothermia in 2016 and 2017. Sadly, a death from hypothermia is a preventable death. YOU can be the difference between life and death for our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness. If you see someone outside in the cold, please call 311.

“A Place to Belong and Feel Safe”

Georgetown Ministry Center is a lot of things. A space for people on the street to wash clothes and take a shower. A support system. A trusted resource. And a place to belong and feel safe.

But don’t just take our word for it. Watch this video to hear from GMC guests and to learn more about our work in the Georgetown community.

Now that you’ve seen our work in action, will you help us to continue to improve the lives of homeless men and women? If you haven’t already, please make a tax-deductible donation by December 31: https://donate.georgetownministrycenter.org/campaign/georgetown-ministry-center-year-end-2017/c149342

Thank you!

Each year, the Editorial Board of The Georgetowner selects a group of individuals to honor as their “Georgetowners of the Year.” We are thrilled to have our Executive Director, Gunther Stern, named among the 2017 honorees!
Recognized as a “relentless advocate for the homeless,” the paper cites “the unstoppable Stern has given voice and visibility to the homeless among us.”

We hope you’ll join us in saying, “Bravo, Gunther!” for this well-deserved accolade! Georgetown Ministry Center is grateful for Stern’s advocacy, service and leadership over the past nearly 3 decades.

It’s GMC’s 12 Days of Giving: Day 1!

Georgetown Ministry Center is excited to announce our 12 Days of Giving Campaign, kicking off today!

This year, we’ve partnered with 11 generous local businesses who have joined forces with us to help end homelessness! These amazing establishments have made in-kind donations to be given away one-by-one during each day of our 12-day online fundraising campaign which will run December 11 – December 22.

The way it works is simple: Each participating establishment has been assigned a day. Donate to GMC on that day, and/or share that day’s campaign link on your Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram accounts (don’t forget to tag GMC so we see it!), and you could win that day’s giveaway! Keep an eye on your inbox (sign up for our newsletter from the homepage of our website if you haven’t already!) and check GMC’s social media pages throughout the life of the campaign to receive details about each day’s prize giveaway.

Day 1’s community supporter is The Kennedy Center!

We’ll be giving away a collection of Kennedy Center performance posters, a 50th Anniversary Washington National Opera coffee table book and an official program book from the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors! (valued at $150)

We hope you’ll join us and our amazing community supporters to achieve our end of year fundraising goal to support GMC’s center operations during the 12 Days of Giving. Donate today!
