Monday morning, 11am. It is time for our knitting group at GMC. The class usually starts out with everyone showing their progress– a few more inches of a scarf, the start of a hat, ideas of what they want to do next. When Pat, our teacher, asked Sandra what she’s been up to, Sandra nonchalantly replied, “Oh, I crocheted this the other day.”

A day and a half, and she made a multi-colored sweater with a hood, pockets, and ribbed trim. Our members are always impressing us.

We are in the midst of creating an informational video for our website. Nelson, our volunteer who is also a filmmaker, is helping us put together the video, but is also getting our members involved in the process. Today, Nelson came in to show everyone what he’s done so far, as well as to give a short overview about film editing — very handy for deleting all of the “umm”s that permeated staff member Stephanie’s interview!

Nelson projected the movie onto our white wall, which was great for allowing everyone to see the video.

Here, Nelson is explaining certain aspects of editing video. Check our website soon for the final product!

It’s November 1, which means that hypothermia season has officially started. We’ve all felt the onset of colder weather, especially with the flurries last Saturday, and we should all take care to prevent hypothermia. Winter is an especially difficult for the thousands of homeless people in the region, but one of the simplest steps you can take to help is to call the Hypothermia Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 when you see someone in need. The Shelter Hotline can provide transportation to emergency shelters and distribute items such as blankets, gloves and jackets.

Read on after the jump to learn more about the causes and symptoms of hypothermia.

This past Saturday, October 29, the Brownie Troop of board member Jocelyn Dyer’s daughter made bagged lunches for the guests at Georgetown Ministry Center. Nutritious and delicious, each bag contained a sandwich, an apple, and a granola bar. The Brownie Troop also decorated each lunch bag– check out the pictures we took of some of the bags.

Thank you so much for the lunches!

I joined the members of Epiphany Catholic Church at a mini-walk for GMC today.  Because of the rain we walked around the sanctuary and parish hall below.   The walk was organized by GMC board member and Epiphany parishioner Wonkook Park along with Father Paul Lee and Father Tom Reilly. The enthusiastic parishioners were prepared for a walk around the neighborhood with signs beseeching, honk for the homeless and they were not muted by the weather.   As we walked around the sanctuary Wonkook would yell out “Help the Homeless!”  The crowd responded, “Help the Homeless!”

Father Tom would yell out “Honk, Honk”,  The willing congregants would respond, “Honk, Honk.”  And so it went.

Thank you Epiphany Church.  You guys are great!
