“So when will we see you in the center next?” I asked a guest Wednesday evening.

“Hmm… tomorrow is Thursday. Pat comes on Thursday. I’ll see you tomorrow!”

Many of our guests look forward to Thursdays for the same reason: Pat Davies, sandwich donor extraordinaire. Everyone enjoys the array of food Pat brings– two kinds of sandwiches (pb&j or turkey and cheese), grapes, clementines, and assorted baked goods– but what makes us all so happy to see Pat is her desire to spend a few minutes in the center to see how everyone is doing.

Pat and her helpers (fellow parishioners of Georgetown Presbyterian Church) distribute their sandwiches and greet our guests by name. She listens– really listens– to the answer when she asks, “How are you doing?”

When I asked a few people why they like Pat, many stated that they like being able to thank her in person for the sandwiches. This sentiment is echoed generally as well; a few guests have approached me and said they wish they could meet the sandwich donors in order to thank them.

If you are a sandwich donor and have a few minutes to spare, feel free to stay and chat with our amazing guests. They want to tell you for themselves how much your sandwiches are appreciated.

Our guests look forward to sandwiches that our wonderful donors bring in every day. Often, it’s one of the first things that they ask for in the morning. However, our regular Monday sandwich donor is unable to bring in sandwiches next week.

We would greatly appreciate it if someone would be willing to step up and make sandwiches for Monday, September 19.

Twenty to forty sandwiches — peanut butter and jelly or turkey and cheese (or both!) —  would be very much appreciated. Feel free to also stick around and pass out sandwiches with staff; our guests love personally thanking our sandwich donors!

If you’re interested in bringing sandwiches on the 19th (or on Sundays), please email Stephanie, our Program Coordinator, at stephanie@gmcgt.org or call GMC (202-338-8301) to let her know.

Thanks so much for all of your continued support!

We are asked all the time, “What do you need?”   We often fumble with the answer, but today I have an urgent need.  Washcloths, socks, and underwear (clean of course).  The wash clothes walk out of the place as fast as I can buy them.  Some would like to inventory them and sign them out and in.  I would rather increase our supply.  If they need the wash clothes let them have them.  I suspect they use them to keep clean when they are out on the street.  It is such a small thing but it would help so much if people out there could donate their tattered, old wash clothes.

It has been raining.  Raining hard.  The creek is up, the river is up and socks and shoes are soaked.  Can you spare some socks? Our guests would love it.

Underwear are always in demand.  New or used but clean please.

Thanks for your support!  It is so important to us.

This past Monday GMC held its first chess competition! Many thanks to our guest, Allen, who not only loaned us another chess set and two clocks, but also announced the tournament rules before we began.

After two hours of competitive chess, round-robin style, our grand prize winner is Allen, followed by Mike. Congratulations to both of them! We can’t wait to find out who our checkers tournament winner will be in October!

The weather is going to get bad. Please call the shelter hotline at 1-800-535-7252 if you are aware of anyone in need of shelter during the storm. There are shelters open around the clock during the emergency and there are contingencies for more if needed.
